An Important Update: Progress and Needs

A big 'thank you' goes to our gardeners who came out to our meeting last Saturday afternoon! It was beautiful out, so we appreciate the time you spent indoors with us! For those of you who couldn't make it, let us fill you in on some important information.
Garden Progress:
We currently have four raised beds for vegetables and one 12'x2' raised herb bed. We also have our sign placed at the garden sight –so now you’ll recognize us when you’re driving down Seaboard!
We are eagerly awaiting a city council vote to see if we will be granted a tap for water access by Greenwood CPW, and would like to extend a HUGE thanks to Steve Reeves, our wonderful CPW manager for proposing this! The tap would provide us with our own meter and convenient access to water. We hope to have an update for you soon!
Also, our seedlings are growing fast and will soon be ready for our beds. Thanks to our gardeners, we have a assortment of seedlings going, including a variety of tomatoes and peppers, tomatillos, oregano, basil, cucumber, squash, cantaloupe, zucchini, and greens to name a few- as well as an assortment of flowers to attract those beneficial insects!
We are in the process of confirming dates for meetings and work days for the rest of April, so check back soon, because one of those dates will be for planting!
This progress is great, but we really could use your help in a few areas to keep things moving along. What can you do? Well, since you asked, here you go:
Donate your resources:
We are looking for a free (or very inexpensive) source for wood chips for our garden pathways, not only to maintain the paths, but also for increased wheelchair accessibility. We also need bales of pine straw to hold in moisture in our beds and deter those nasty weeds.
Donate your time:
We are currently developing our gardening watering and weeding schedule. Could you donate no more than two hours a week to either weed or water in our garden? Spaces are still available for weekdays or weekends and times are flexible.
The more raised beds we have, the more our garden can produce –which provides more healthy, organic produce for our gardeners and for our community. Would you consider donating your time (and maybe the time of a few of your friends?) to come out and build some raised beds for us?
Donate your knowledge:
Finally, we are looking for community members that are willing to share their knowledge with either adults or children (or both!) about something that they are passionate about and that we can relate to community gardening. Are you a health care professional? Come share about the benefits of healthy eating and prevention of chronic disease. Do you have a green thumb? Share your knowledge with our gardeners about your favorite techniques. Do you like to cook? Teach us how to utilize our produce!
If you have interest in helping in any of these areas, contact us at jardinmaravilloso@gmail.com or call (864)378-8496. And remember, check back soon for updates!
